Looking Ahead: Judas

Forum's next production is The Last Days of Judas Iscariot by Stephen Adly Guirgis (April 13--May 4, 2008).  As we start our design meetings, first reads, and production research, I wanted to start passing on some pre-show info and insight that's going into our production.

Our research has begun, obviously, with some good 'ok Bible reading (memories of Bible Camp have been flooding back in droves lately), but we've been lucky to find this other book that has become quite invaluable to our studies.  A Jesuit Off-Broadway was published a few months ago and is a sort-of production diary for the original production of Last Days.  The text was written by James Martin, a Jesuit priest, and follows the Philip Seymour Hoffman-directed production at the Public Theatre with the LAByrinth Theatre Company.  Martin served as the "theological adviser" to the production and gives some really interesting insight, not only into the production, but into the religious issues and debates brought up in the script.

If you are looking for some more winter reading, I recommend checking this book out before you come see our production.  We'll be using some of the ideas brought up in this book for our post-show talks, so join us in our research and then come and join the dialogue in April.

My class and I, went to IRT to go see the play Holes. I enjoyed the play very much, and hope to see it again soamedy.Holes is about a boy named Stanley, and how he had a choice to either go to Camp Green Lake, or go to jail. So, Stanley chose Camp. Camp Green Lake is not a regular camp. Camp Green Lake is where boys go who have gotten in trouble with the law. And, what the boys do, is different, too. What the boys are made to do, is dig holes. While Stanley was there, he met a few boys. At first, the boys did not like Stanley at all. But, after a while, Stanley started to rub off on them. The boys did not like to admit it, but they liked Stanley. But, there was this one very different boy. His name was Zero. Zero didn't talk much, so everyone just assumed that he was stupid and didn't know a thing. But, Stanley saw something different in him. So, Stanley started talking to him and they made a deal. In the end, Zero saves the day with the ability that Stanley helped him find. Everyone was amazed. Even Stanley was amazed. But Stanley and Zero both knew, way down deep, that Zero could do it. So, when it was time for Stanley to go back home, Stanley would not leave without Zero. So, Stanley was able to take Zero home with him, and Stanley did something that only a true friend would do. Stanley made Zero's live SO much better than it would have ever been. If Stanley was never sent to Camp Green Lake, then Zero and Stanley would have never met, and Zero would still be at Camp Green Lake, digging and digging those holes.
